UltiMed expanding De Smet operations

PIERRE, S.D. - UltiMed, Inc., a medical supply manufacturer, will expand operations at its De Smet facility, Gov. Mike Rounds announced today.

The company produces insulin syringes for diabetics and is moving into the growing pen needle market. UltiMed also manufactures other healthcare and veterinary products.

As part of its expansion, the firm expects to add 40 full-time positions within three years and is purchasing new equipment, including a pen needle machine and packager. The equipment will allow Ulti-Med to produce and package pen needles stateside. Historically, these products have been produced overseas.

“UltiMed is a good fit for South Dakota and aligns very well with our efforts to grow the bioscience industry in the state,” Gov. Rounds said. “Additional equipment, more employees and expanded operations will reinforce the firm’s presence in the state. I’m delighted with its progress.”

“The pen needle market is really growing in the United States and Canada,” said Tom Erickson, UltiMed CEO. “Demand is up, and expanding our facility in De Smet is absolutely essential for UltiMed to keep up with orders.”

The project, which is expected to cost $ $993,000, is partially financed through Governor’s Office of Economic Development programs.

“We are very excited about the expansion and additional jobs that will be created,” said Ken Roeder, president of the De Smet Development Corporation. “The new jobs will not only benefit our community but the surrounding area as well. We appreciate UltiMed’s commitment to De Smet.”

Those interested in applying for positions at UltiMed can inquire at the South Dakota Department of Labor office, 1310 S. Main Ave., Brookings, S.D., 57006, 605-688-4350.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development is a division of the Department of Tourism and State Development. GOED’s primary goal is to move South Dakota’s economy forward through business development.
