Red Flag Warning today: Critical Fire Weather Conditions for portions of Southern SD
PIERRE, S.D. – Critical Fire Weather Conditions are expected today (Monday) in a large portion of southern SD. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning today from late morning into the evening. Dry fire fuels, strong gusty winds, and dry air today are contributing factors. South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF) urges residents in affected areas to use additional caution to prevent igniting a spark outside today.
The warning extends from the southwestern SD border east to south of Chamberlain. Some areas included in the warning are Sturgis, Rapid City, Hot Springs, Pine Ridge, Wall, Mission, and Winner. See the attached NWS graphic for specific areas included in this warning.
Do not burn outdoors, throw cigarette butts out car windows, or use machinery that could spark a ground fire.
SDWF is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
