US 183 Project Wins Highway Construction Award
PIERRE, SD– The US 183 project from I-90 at Presho to the White RiverBridge recently received honors as the best grading project in the state. South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Operations Director, Darin Bergquist announced the award winners Wednesday, January 4, at the SDDOT/AGC (Associated General Contractors) Partnership for Highway Quality banquet in Pierre.
The project involved grading and interim surfacing of 13 miles of US 183. A key element was developing a storm water prevention plan. Contractor, Scweigert Construction, Inc. of Gregory and SDDOT’s Winner Area Office worked closely together to develop the plan, which withstood numerous heavy rains throughout the duration of the project.
Schweigert also took special measures to ensure safety during construction. They placed extra flaggers several miles off the project to warn bikers traveling to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally of the construction ahead and to give the option of taking an alternate route. The contractor also used this process to warn motorists of fresh oil well in advance to reduce incidents of damage to vehicles.
Scweigert worked with seven subcontractors: Bituminous Paving, Inc.; Dakota Prairie Landscapes; Dakota Traffic Services, LLC; Goldsmith & Heck Engineers & Land Surveyors, Inc.; J.H. Hilt Engineering, Inc.; Johnson Trucking and Steffen Fencing.
Each year the SDDOT and AGC award top construction projects around the state at the annual partnering meeting. A committee made up of members from both organizations and the Federal Highway Administration evaluate the nominations and select the top winners.
