                                                      A Year of Unity note:

Eagle Butte, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, will observe its 100th anniversary during Centennial Days on July 14-15.

The Milwaukee Land Co. dedicated a parcel of land in 1910 that became the community of Eagle Butte. To mark the centennial, a wagon train and Pony Express ride are planned.

The wagon train will leave July 14 from the Cheyenne River and arrive July 15 in Eagle Butte.

Men, women and children will serve as Pony Express riders, carrying copies of historic Eagle Butte documents of incorporation on an 85-mile journey from the State Capitol in Pierre to Eagle Butte on July 15.

Gov. Mike Rounds has proclaimed July 14-15 as Eagle Butte Centennial Days.

The centennial observance is part of Eagle Butte Hometown Days July 15-18. In addition to the wagon train and Pony Express ride, there will be musical entertainment, an artists’ market, an all-school reunion, exhibits of Lakota culture and a street dance.

Eagle Butte, in DeweyCounty, is the headquarters of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

A commemoration by the 2010 Legislature says the town gets its name from a butte south of the community. The document states that the butte was once a habitat for eagles, where Lakota people still go to pray. It was designated a historical site by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in 2009.

Two other reservation communities will host centennial celebrations this month. Dupree will have Pioneer Days July 8-11, and TimberLake’s Days of 1910 will be observed July 22-25.
