SDDOT Featured in National Magazines

Pierre, S.D. - Two national magazines are recognizing the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) for its road mapping and information gathering system.

South Dakota is just one of a few states in the nation that has all of its roads inventoried within a Geographic Information System (GIS). This gives the state the ability to specifically locate and retrieve information and gather data on all of South Dakota’s 83,000 miles of road. But that’s just part of the reason Professional Surveyor Magazine and ArcNews are featuring the SDDOT in their August issues.

“What is really most impressive to the industry is how we’ve worked with other state and local organizations to get our program running and how we’ve shared that information,” said Roger Brees, Transportation Specialist, SDDOT. “South Dakota is a small state and that benefited us greatly in this endeavor. Different organizations talk and interact often, so working together is very natural for us.”

The information gathered by the SDDOT program is also used by several other government entities. For instance, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department uses the mapping information put together by SDDOT to show hunters where and how to access hunting land. The Department of Public Safety uses the data collected from the system to track traffic accidents and identify high-risk areas.
