I-90 to open Sioux Falls to Minnesota, Rapid City to Sturgis
PIERRE, S.D. – Effective at 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday Dec. 26, Interstate 90 will re-open from Sioux Falls east to the Minnesota line and from Sturgis east to Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Officials remind motorists that even though those segments of interstate are officially open, winter driving conditions will be present, including some snowpacked and slippery areas and blowing snow. Officials with the state Departments of Transportation and Public Safety will assess condition of other highways in South Dakota throughout the day to determine when other openings are possible.
Secretary of Public Safety Tom Dravland urged residents to be patient with travel plans. If vehicles become stuck as crews are trying to re-open roads, the work is delayed while the vehicle is freed and moved from the area. That sets back the process of restoring normal winter driving conditions and will subject the driver to being billed for the cost of removal and towing.
