Passage of Initiated Measure 18 Increases State Minimum Wage

PIERRE, S.D. – The minimum wage ballot issue approved Nov. 4 increases South Dakota’s hourly minimum wage for non-tipped employees from $7.25 to $8.50 per hour. It is effective Jan. 1, 2015.

The minimum wage increase will then be annually adjusted by any increase in the cost of living, as measured in the Consumer Price Index published by the U.S. Department of Labor. In no case may the minimum wage be decreased.

The new adjusted rate will be posted to the Department of Labor and Regulation’s website for the following year no later than Oct. 15 of each year.

The hourly minimum wage for tipped employees will be half the minimum wage for non-tipped employees. Wages and tips combined must equal at least the minimum wage.

These increases will apply to all South Dakota employers, with some limited exceptions. For more information, visit http://dlr.sd.gov/wagehrs/minimumwage.aspx.
