South Dakota Opens Application Window for Scholarship Granting Organizations

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) announced today it is accepting applications from eligible Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) for inclusion in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC) program, President Donald J. Trump’s school choice initiative. Last year, Governor Rhoden opted into the program. This is an educational milestone allowing families the freedom to make the educational decisions that are best for their children.

When Governor Rhoden opted in to the program, he pledged to ensure that families are able to choose the educational path that is right for their kids, whether that is traditional public or nonpublic schools, or more customized learning settings such as homeschool, microschools, and classical schools. SGOs interested in supporting South Dakota students are encouraged to apply.

Consistent with the Trump Administration’s approach to make the program widely available and support innovation, South Dakota’s application collects the necessary information to meet program requirements.

“Whether a student attends a traditional public school, private school, microschool, classical school, or homeschool, the goal remains the same: for South Dakota students to receive enhanced learning opportunities to pursue their goals after high school completion,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves. “The FSTC program provides students with additional resources that will positively impact their education.”

All taxpayers, regardless of their state of residence, can support the educational journey of South Dakota students. In 2027, families will be able to explore an official list of qualifying SGOs and select one or more to support.  Donors can give up to $1,700 as an individual ($3,400 as a married couple) to qualifying SGOs for a 100%, nonrefundable tax credit. That means more money to students instead of to the federal government.
