New Motorcycle Training Range Opens to Strengthen Rider Safety in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. — A new motorcycle training range officially opened April 1 in Sioux Falls, expanding hands-on training opportunities and marking a significant step forward in improving rider safety across South Dakota. The site was presented to the media during a grand opening event today.

“My top priority as Governor is to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “A safety class like this is such a great investment, and I know it will help our motorcyclists stay safe on the roads.”

The range is the result of a long-standing partnership between the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and the South Dakota Safety Council, an effort that has been focused on reducing injuries and fatalities through education, awareness, and training for nearly 50 years.

Through this partnership, the South Dakota Safety Council provides a range of motorcycle training opportunities, including Basic Rider Training (BRT), eBasic Rider Training (eBRT), advanced courses like the Braking and Cornering Clinic, and soon, online options for three-wheel and off-highway vehicles.

“The BRT course is designed for new or returning riders and combines classroom and on-cycle instruction to teach fundamental skills, street strategies, and emergency maneuvers,” said Brian Christiaansen, Director, Motorcycle Rider Education Program with the South Dakota Safety Council. “Successful participants earn a waiver for the DMV written and riding tests, allowing them to obtain a motorcycle endorsement.”

Recognizing the growing challenge of finding large, unobstructed training areas, the South Dakota Department of Transportation partnered with stakeholders to provide space for a dedicated asphalt motorcycle training pad.

"The Office of Highway Safety is proud to partner with the South Dakota Safety Council and DOT on such an important project,” said Rob Weinmeister, Director, Office of Highway Safety. “We are committed to increasing highway safety by providing high quality education to motorcycle riders, and our outstanding instructors deliver on this commitment. We are grateful to have incredible partners supporting our mission."

The new range provides a consistent, reliable location for hands-on training, supported by available DOT conference space, and reflects a continued commitment to motorcycle safety for the benefit of riders and all who share South Dakota’s roadways.
