Gov. Rounds appoints Dr. Shank to South Dakota Science and Technology Authority
 
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds today announced the appointment of Dr. Charles V. Shank, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Berkeley, California, to a position on the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (Authority). Dr. Shank currently is a Senior Fellow, JFRC Howard Hughes Medical Institute. 
 
“I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Charles Shank has agreed to become a member of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority,” said Gov. Rounds. “Dr. Shank will provide extensive laboratory experience, having served 15 years as the Director, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California, and 20 years at the AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, New Jersey. He is a distinguished professor and research scientist who will share his research knowledge and perspective as the Authority moves forward with development of the Sanford Laboratory and the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at Homestake.”
 
“DUSEL is emerging as a top priority for the scientific community. It will be a unique underground laboratory that will facilitate discoveries and inform us about the universe in which we thrive,” said Dr. Shank.
 
Dr. Shank serves on the National Academy of Sciences Board on Physics and Astronomy.  He served as Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1989-2004. He also serves as a Board of Governors member for the Argonne Lab and Fermi Lab, University of Chicago.
 
Dr. Shank holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the departments of Chemistry, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Physics from 1989-2007. He continues his work at the University of California, Berkeley, serving on the Governing Board, Energy Biosciences Initiative and the Advisory Board, Department of Chemistry.
