PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) recently purchased 10 new pieces for the state’s public art collection through the Art for State Buildings program.
The artworks were selected by a five-member advisory committee to the SDAC, which reviewed 80 purchase proposals from 65 different artists and based its decisions on set review criteria including: quality of the work and relevance to the artist’s career; the artwork’s relevance to South Dakota environment, history, heritage, or culture; professional experience of the artist; durability and safety, as required for public artworks and viewers.
New purchases:

- Roger Broer, Hill City, “Presence of a Hero,” monotype print, 17x13.7 inches;
- Allison Russell, Mitchell, “Sunrise at Sylvan,” photograph, 21x28 inches;
- Charlene Brown, Pierre, “Thin Ice, Take II,” oil, 21.5x25.5 inches;
- Emma Rivers, Rapid City, “The Space Between,” mixed media, 12x12 inch triptych;
- Donald Montileaux. Rapid City, “Morning Thunder,” mixed media, 21x27 inches;
- Hector Curriel, Sioux Falls, “The Last Battle,” acrylic on canvas, 30x24 inches;
- Mecca Rutherford, Sioux Falls, “Settling In,” oil on canvas, 48x96 inches;
- DeVee Dietz, Sturgis, “Spring Sensations,” mixed media, 21.5x17.5 inches; and
- Jennifer Stone, Watertown, “Chasing the Sun,“ watercolor, 36.5x26.5 inches.

The Art For State Buildings program was established in 2008 by the South Dakota State Legislature for the purpose of creating a permanent state art collection showcasing South Dakota artists and artwork. The State Art Collection is displayed in publicly accessible areas of state government buildings located throughout the capital city of Pierre. The South Dakota Arts Council manages the collection and the program. Purchase proposals are accepted on an annual basis.
