Futuristic Smithsonian Exhibition Visits Chamberlain

Forecasting the future often conjures up images of living like the Jetsons, the convenience of robots, spaceships and ultra-sonic showers. Yesterday’s Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future, a traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition, explores 19th- and 20th-century expectations of the future. Visitors will discover what was predicted in housing, transportation, books, movies and communities of the future and compare those visions to today’s world.

Sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Tourism, South Dakota Humanities Council, State Historic Preservation Office and South Dakota State University Extension Youth Development/4-H, the Yesterday’s Tomorrows exhibit opened April 29 at the South Dakota Hall of Fame in Chamberlain. The exhibit will continue through May 31.

Visitors can journey through local displays at each of the six remaining South Dakota communities hosting Yesterday’s Tomorrows exhibition throughout 2002.
