Yankton County Fatal Crash

What:    2-vehicle fatal crash

Where: U.S. Highway 81, MM 6, three miles north of Yankton, S.D.

When:   9:53 a.m., Thursday, Aug 24, 2023

Driver No. 1: Male, 37, No injuries

Vehicle No. 1: 2005 Peterbilt Semi tractor trailer

Driver No. 2: Female, 44, Fatal injuries

Vehicle No. 2: 2014 Ford Escape

YANKTON COUNTY, S.D.- One person died this morning in a two-vehicle crash three miles north of Yankton, S.D.

The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2005 Peterbilt Semi tractor trailer was traveling southbound on US 81 near mile marker 6. A 2014 Ford Escape was also traveling southbound on US 81 near mile marker 6.   The Semi was turning right near a parking lot.  The Escape hit the rear end of the Semi’s trailer.  The Semi came to a stop in the intersection and the Escape came to a stop on the roadway.

The 37-year-old male driver of the 2005 Peterbilt Semi tractor trailer was not injured.

He was wearing a seatbelt.

The 44-year-old female driver of the 2014 Ford Escape sustained fatal injuries.

She was wearing a seatbelt.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
