MISSOURI RIVER PARKS AND FACILITIES AFFECTED BY FLOODING
PIERRE - Rising waters along the Missouri River are affecting boat ramps and state recreation areas on Lake Francis Case.
State Park Director Doug Hofer said boat ramps at several areas have been closed, and at least two campgrounds have been affected by floodwaters. Water levels are expected to drop significantly during the coming weeks, and should be back to normal before Memorial Day.
"Unless we receive heavy rainfall during the coming days, waters on Lake Francis Case should begin dropping next week," Hofer said. "Until then, campers and anglers should be aware that some areas will not be open to the public."
"North Point Recreation Area in Charles Mix County was the most heavily-impacted park," said Park Manager Matt Milligan. "Two-thirds of the campground is closed, electrical service was discontinued and only one restroom is available at this time. We are very optimistic, however, that these facilities will be available for the Mother’s Day weekend."
- North Point - The main boat ramp is closed, but access is available at St. Francis Bay and Prairie Dog Bay.
- White Swan - Closed.
- Pease Creek - Closed.
- North Wheeler - Open.
- Snake Creek - The main boat ramp is closed, but the high-water ramp is open.
- West Bridge - Open.
- Buryanek - Open.
- Platte Creek - Open.
- Elm Creek - Closed.
- Spillway (below Fort Randall Dam) - Only open to small boats.
"All things considered, there is still plenty of opportunity to enjoy the Missouri River and its many great recreation areas," Hofer said. "Last weekend more than 80 families camped in the Yankton-area parks and nearly two dozen at the North Point campgrounds. Another 50 camping units were recorded at Snake and Platte creek recreation areas, so the camping season is off to a good start."
