Food Stamp Program in South Dakota changes name

PIERRE, S.D. –The Food Stamp Program in South Dakota will transition to a new name beginning July 1, to be consistent with changes at the federal level.

Nationally, the name of the food stamp program became the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in October 2008. The South Dakota Food Stamp Program will transition its name to SNAP beginning July 1, to better reflect the program’s goals of focusing on nutrition and putting healthy food within reach for low-income households.

In May 2009, 75,573 people (31,537 households) received food stamp benefits in South Dakota through the Department of Social Services. To apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, contact your local Department of Social Services office or visit dss.sd.gov/snap.
