Prescribed Burn west of Hermosa Planned Today
Rapid City, S.D. – South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF) is planning a prescribed burn about 5 miles west of Hermosa and north of Highway 40, on Thursday, May 16.
SDWF and interagency partners plan to burn approximately 13 acres of grassy terrain. It is expected to be a one-day burn. Crews will mop up and monitor as long as necessary to ensure the fire is extinguished.
Objectives of the burn are to improve wildlife habitat and promote the future growth of present fuel models by reducing the built-up thatch layer. It also provides safe and quality training for firefighting staff.
Weather conditions will be monitored closely to ensure conditions align with objectives for the burn.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas and can linger for several days after the prescribed burn has been completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol, and monitor fire lines as appropriate for public and firefighter safety.
South Dakota Wildland Fire is an agency of the Department of Public Safety.
