PIERRE, S.D. – The following are news tips from offices and agencies within South Dakota State Government:
Monday, March 6, near Rapid City, 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. (MST) - The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will hold two public meetings to discuss the upcoming construction timeline for projects involving the I-90 S-Curves at Exit 51 and the old Highway 79 service road. The first meeting will begin at 4 p.m. followed by a second meeting at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be held at Stagestop Receptions at Exit 48. For more information, contact Steve Palmer, 394-2248.
Tuesday, March 7, Pierre, 11:45 a.m. (CST) – Gov. Mike Rounds will present awards at the Board of Vocational Rehabilitation 2006 Governor’s Awards Luncheon being held at the Best Western Ramkota Inn. This awards luncheon recognizes the efforts of individuals, employers, and organizations for their contributions to the employment of persons with disabilities. Wednesday-Thursday, March 8-9, Huron, 9 a.m. (CST) - The Department of Labor’s CornerstonesCareerLearningCenter, in conjunction with the South Dakota Career Center (SDCC), is offering a Job Search Assistance Program (JSAP) class. The JSAP class will cover information on job search and retention skills including how to fill out job applications, how to write resumes and cover letters, and how to prepare for a successful interview. It will be held at the Huron SDCC conference room located at 380 Illinois Avenue SW. The class is provided at no charge. Note: Times may vary depending on class size. Thursday, March 9, Watertown, 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. (CST) - The Department of Labor’s South Dakota Career Center, along with the Watertown Area Career Learning Center, Lake Area Technical Institute and Lake Area Multi-District, will hold the 3rd annual Watertown Area Women in Science Event for approximately 180 tenth graders from area high schools. Keynote speaker Joanna Vitek, Watertown Police Chief, will speak at the DD Miller Auditorium, 200 9th St. NE. The students will then go to Lake Area Technical Institute and attend six small group sessions presented by a cosmetics company chemist, a mortician, a biologist, an engineer, a dentist and a food science laboratory manager, all successful local women. Local employers and organizations, including the South Dakota Department of Labor, will also have exhibits set up to encourage career exploration and give information on training and skills needed for science careers. Thursday, March 9, Sioux Falls, 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (CST) – Gov. Mike Rounds will host the South Dakota State Pandemic Influenza Summit to discuss with South Dakotans what is being done at the state level to prepare for pandemic influenza and to encourage local entities to begin their planning. He will be joined by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt, Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Julie Gerberding, and other federal officials who will outline the federal planning and response effort. Thursday, March 9, Watertown, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (CST) - The Department of Labor’s Watertown Career Learning Center will hold a six-hour Job Hunting Tips Workshop (JSAP) at the Watertown Career Center conference room, located at 2001 9th Ave. SW, Suite 200. The workshop will cover: assessing skills, abilities and strengths; how to and where to look for work; interviewing techniques; job retention/employee loyalty; setting career goals; and written communications, including resume writing, cover letter development, and applications. This workshop is provided at no charge. To register, call 882-5080.
Thursday-Sunday, March 9-12, Sioux Falls - Game, Fish and Parks officials from both the Wildlife Division and the Parks and Recreation Division will be represented at the Sioux Empire Sportsmen’s Boat, Camping and Vacation Show in the Sioux Falls Arena and Civic Center. Department staff will be available to discuss fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor-related topics. Each division will also have copies of its current publications. In addition, staff will be available to guide visitors through the steps of reserving campsites online. A computer will be set up at the booth, and with the help of staff, visitors can set up an account and make camping reservations during the show.
Friday-Saturday, March 10-11, Ft. Pierre, 7 p.m. (CST) – The Family Support Council Meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Express. The meeting will continue on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Donna Olivier, 773-3438 or Julie Johnson, 367-5250.
