Mountain Lion Season Harvest Update

PIERRE, S.D. – Another mountain lion was taken this morning approximately two-miles northwest of Rockerville. This is the eight mountain lion and fifth male harvested in South Dakota’s first mountain lion season that opened Oct. 1.

This lion was a two-year-old sub-adult male that weighed 98 pounds and was in good condition, according to Game, Fish and Parks Wildlife Biologist Steve Griffin of Rapid City. "The hunter was specifically hunting mountain lions by stalking and using a cow elk call. He called-in and harvested the lion around 9:30 a.m. today (Wednesday)."

The date, sex, age, weight and area taken of the mountain lions harvested to date include:

  1. Oct. 1, female, 5-7 years old, 84 pounds, taken seven-miles west of Spearfish.
  2. Oct. 2, female, 2-3 years old, 93 pounds, taken one-mile west of Custer State Park.
