Gov. Rounds Appoints McMahon to Game, Fish and Parks Commission
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds today announced the appointment of James E. McMahon, Canton, to the Game, Fish and Parks Commission. McMahon is an attorney with the law firm of Murphy, Goldammer & Prendergast, L.L.P. in Sioux Falls. His practice involves trial work in state and federal courts.
“Jim will be a solid addition to the Game, Fish and Parks Commission,” said Gov. Rounds. “His experience in law will be an asset to the commission as it deals with legal concerns and issues in many aspects of their duties.”
“I am very excited to serve on the Commission. I love the outdoors and have hunted and fished all of my life. This is an opportunity for me to offer whatever service I can in an area of great interest to me,” said McMahon.
McMahon received his B.S. from Morningside College in 1973, and attended law school at The University of South Dakota, where he received his J.D. in 1977. He was admitted to the South Dakota Bar in 1978; the U.S. District Court, District of South Dakota, in 1980; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, 8th Circuit, in 1980. He served as an Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota from 1978 to 1981 and was then in private practice in Sioux Falls until 2002 when he was appointed United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota by President George W. Bush. He served as U.S. Attorney until 2005 and then returned to private practice.
He is a member of the Second Circuit Bar Association, the State Bar of South Dakota, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association.
McMahon lives in rural Canton with his wife, Kathy. They have three children, all married.
He will begin to serve a partial term on the commission on May 5, 2008. He will represent eastern South Dakota and fill the position currently held by Richard Brown, who has moved from Sioux Falls to Custer.
