Entries Sought for Centennial Vehicle Shows

PIERRE, S.D. - Owners of two- and four-wheeled rides who want to show them off are getting a special invitation to the Capitol Centennial Celebration in Pierre next month. Organizers are seeking entries for motorcycle and antique car shows during the June 19 day-long event.

Both shows will be held in the parking area north of the South Dakota Capitol. The motorcycle show runs from 9 a.m. to noonCDT; the car show is from 9 – 5 p.m. There is no entry fee for either show, and both are free to the public.

More than 65 vehicles are already lined up for the car show. Organizer Rich Shangreaux says his goal is to have a vehicle representing every year for the past 100 years.

“The oldest car we have signed up so far is a 1915 Buick, and the entries go all the way up to a 2010 Dodge Challenger. Vehicles of any year, make and model are welcome,” Shangreaux said. “We’d really like as much of a variety as we can get. It’s a great opportunity for car buffs to show off their vehicles and for the public to see and appreciate all the hard work and creativity that goes into these vehicles.”

Space is limited and entries are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The car show will not be judged. Show participants are also invited to take part in the Oahe Days Euclid Cruise at the 5 p.m. close of the car show.

People who sign up for the motorcycle show not only have the chance to display their bikes, they also are invited to ride them on a tour of historic sites in the Pierre and FortPierre area. The historic observation run will be held after the show, organizer Frenchy Taft said.

“The observation run leaves from the Capitol at 2 p.m. All participants get a map of local historic sites and a list of questions about those sites. When the run is over, all run sheets with the correct answers will be entered in a prize drawing,” Taft said. “The observation run is a fun way for people to learn more about the CapitalCity’s history and get in a nice ride, too.”

The observation run ends at 4 p.m. at Petersen Motors, where the People’s Choice Award winner will be announced.
