SOUTH DAKOTA AND STANDING ROCK SIOUX TRIBE INK NEW GAMBLING COMPACT

MOBRIDGE, S.D. -- The state of South Dakota and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe have reached a new compact regarding operation of the tribe’s Grand River Casino in Corson County.

Gov. Mike Rounds and Tribal Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder signed the revised compact Tuesday in a ceremony at the casino, across the Missouri River from Mobridge.

“The new compact is for a term of 10 years, six years longer than the previous four-year compact,” Gov. Rounds said.

The Standing Rock Tribe is allowed to have 250 slot machines and an unlimited number of poker and blackjack tables in the casino, the same number of gaming devices that the tribe was allowed to have under the previous compact.

The maximum bet limit at the Grand River Casino is $100, the same limit state law sets for bets at privately owned casinos in Deadwood.

Gov. Rounds said the tribe agreed to a new provision in the compact requiring up to $1 million in general liability insurance to protect customers who may be injured at the casino.

The new compact is subject to review by the U. S. Secretary of the Interior, who must approve or disapprove the compact within 45 days under federal law.
