 Names Released In Meade County Fatal Crash

What:    Three-Vehicle Crash

Where:  Interstate 90, mile marker 50

              Within the city limits of Summerset, S.D.

When:    9:29 a.m., Thursday, July 14, 2022

Driver No. 1: Anthony Schulz, 64, Wall, S.D., No Injuries

Vehicle: 2019 GMC Sierra

Driver No. 2: Gary Holcombe, 66, Katy, Texas, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2019 Harley Davidson Tri-Glide Ultra Motorcycle

Driver No. 3: Shane Devine, 49, Piedmont, S.D., No Injuries

Vehicle: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup

SUMMERSET, S.D. –  A Katy, Texas man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash on Thursday, July 14, 2022 in Summerset.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2019 Harley Davidson Tri-Glide Ultra motorcycle was westbound on Interstate 90 when it slowed down to avoid a large box that had fallen from a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The motorcycle was rear-ended by a GMC Sierra pickup which was pulling a utility trailer.

Gary Holcombe, the 66-year-old motorcycle driver, was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the north ditch of the interstate. He was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital. He died there on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Neither of the male pickup drivers were injured. Charges are pending against both.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
