Gov. Daugaard Asks For Flags At Half-Staff To Honor Former Sen. Shanard

PIERRE,S.D.– Gov. Dennis Daugaard requests that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m. until sunset in honor of former state Sen. George Shanard of Mitchell, who died Friday.

“George was a warm-hearted, dedicated and respected legislative leader,” Gov. Daugaard said.  “Linda and I will be thinking of his family.”

Shanard, a Mitchell businessman, was a member of the South Dakota Senate from 1975-1992. He served as Republican majority leader from 1989-1992.

Funeral services for Shanard, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell, with burial at the American Legion Cemetery.
