Families Can Create Memories at the South Dakota Outdoor Expo
HURON, S.D.— Many South Dakotans have wonderful memories of spending time outdoors with their families – whether hunting, fishing, or camping. The South Dakota Outdoor Expo is the perfect place for adults to start sharing those experiences with today’s youth and begin creating wonderful memories with their own families. The South Dakota Outdoor Expo will be held May 17-18 at the State Fairgrounds in Huron.
The First Annual Expo will feature approximately 100 hands-on activities presented by outdoor recreation businesses and organizations from around the state.
Families can learn how to cook with a Dutch oven or over a campfire. They can learn how to attract and identify birds, including waterfowl; go geocaching, kayaking or canoeing; learn new outdoor games; and check out the Turn In Poachers trailer. The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks is also offering several family fly fishing sessions.
Some activities geared specifically toward kids include a wetlands puppet show, a worm tunnel, fish print t-shirts, making animal tracks and Safari-in-a-Box. Kids will also have a chance to play with a real wildland fire hose.
Featured presentations that families will not want to miss are outdoor survival sessions, The Bassmeister’s “Fishing for Laughs” comedy show, birds of prey and live bat encounters.
Kids will have an opportunity to fill out a BINGO sheet at the Outdoor Expo based on the activities they participate in. The first 300 kids to turn in a completed BINGO sheet will receive a prize courtesy of Cabela’s.
“The Outdoor Expo has something for every family, from those that go camping every weekend to those that want to learn to explore the outdoors together. This is truly a great family event and best of all, it’s free,” said Jerome Hertel, State Fair Manager.
Major sponsors of the Outdoor Expo are: Wildlife Protection Inc, The Weatherby Foundation, Spader’s RV Center, South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation, South Dakota Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Scheels and South Dakota B.A.S.S. Federation.
The South Dakota Outdoor Expo is FREE to all attendees. Anyone who is currently involved in the outdoors or would like to learn more is invited to attend the first Outdoor Expo. Hours of the event are: Saturday, May 17, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It is sure to be a great experience, no matter what your outdoor skill level may be.
