Agriculture Finance Counseling Resources Available
Pierre, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) has finance counseling and agriculture mediation resources available for crop and livestock producers affected by the national economic downturn.
Low prices for several commodities—including pork, beef, and milk—have stressed many sectors of the agriculture industry. The SDDA is working to assist producers facing financial difficulties.
“Now is the time to be proactive in meeting these economic challenges,” said Secretary of Agriculture Bill Even. “With prices below break-even for much of the livestock industry, many producers are feeling considerable stress. Our finance counselors are ready and able to work with farmers and ranchers to help see them through these tough times.”
Agriculture counselors provide one-on-one financial management assistance to South Dakota producers, such as loan paperwork completion and financial planning.
Counselors assess the producer’s situation while providing support and decision-making resources, including negotiations with lenders for alternative funding sources or loan restructuring.
Agriculture mediation and counseling is offered free of charge to South Dakota farmers and ranchers. Since 1984, this program has assisted over 3,800 producers. Individuals or families interested in agriculture mediation and counseling may contact Dawn Letellier at 605-773-5841. For more information, visit the SDDA website at www.state.sd.us/doa/.
