I-90 to close from Sioux Falls west to Oacoma/Chamberlain
Pierre, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will close Interstate 90 from the I-29 interchange in Sioux Falls west to Oacoma/Chamberlain at noon.
Much of I-90 and most non-Interstate highways are snow-packed and very icy.
Given the strong winds, poor visibility, deteriorating road conditions and anticipated future snow, the Departments of Public Safety and Transportation are strongly encouraging no travel in most of eastern South Dakota and to delay travel until the storm passes.
Winter maintenance activities continue in areas where weather and visibility allow safe operation.
When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Violation is a Class 2 misdemeanor, and motorists can be fined. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.
For up-to-date road conditions, travelers are encouraged to call 511 or visit safetravelusa.com. For the latest weather forecast and warning information, visit www.weather.gov.
