Updated James River Water Levels
Pierre, SD –The latest assessment of water flows in the James River Valley indicates potential for rising waters and additional flooding. Below are the predicted river crest levels by community.
· Columbia area crested on May 7 at 16.7 feet. Flood stage is 13 feet.
· Stratford area expected to crest on May 9 at 17.1 feet. Flood stage is 14 feet.
· Ashton area expected to crest on May 12 at 19.7 feet. Flood stage is 13 feet.
· Redfield area expected to crest on May 13 at 20.6 feet. Flood stage is 20 feet.
· Huron area crested on May 7 at 17.69 feet. Flood stage is 11 feet.
· Forestburg area expected to crest on May 8 at 19 feet. Flood stage is 12 feet.
· Mitchell area expected to crest on May 11 at 25.7 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet.
· Scotland area expected to crest on May 14 at 18.4 feet. Flood stage is 13 feet.
The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management recommends people who have property in the areas expected to receive more water prepare themselves and their property. Here’s how.
· Stay informed by following weather and flood reports.
· Put together an emergency supply go-kit to take with you in case you need to leave your home. It should contain food, water, clothing, medicines and personal documents.
· Establish a communications plan for your family. If you aren’t able to get home, how will you stay in touch with each other? Where will you meet?
· Move basement items to higher ground.
· Make sure sump pumps are functioning correctly.
