Governor's Corrections Workgroup to Meet
(Pierre) - The first meeting of the Governor's Corrections Workgroup is scheduled for July 28-29th in Pierre.
Governor M. Michael Rounds has appointed more than 40 people to the workgroup to study the increasing prison population in South Dakota and to recommend changes to reverse that trend.
The workgroup is comprised of legislators, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, court service, corrections and law enforcement officials, members of the Board of Pardons and Parole, business people, educators, counselors, a former inmate and a pastor. Secretary of Corrections Tim Reisch will chair the workgroup.
The workgroup will be divided into three sub-committees on sentencing, incarceration and rehabilitation and aftercare/community corrections. Each sub-committee will work independently and provide the full workgroup with recommendations.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 PM on Monday, July 28th at the Ramkota River Centre and will conclude at noon on Tuesday, July 29th. An agenda and a list of workgroup members by subcommittee are attached.
The workgroup meetings are open to the public.
