State prison population increases slightly
Pierre, S.D. – The state’s prison population at the end of June was up slightly from the same time period a year earlier.
On June 30th, the number of state prison inmates totaled 3,466. That compares to an institutionalized population of 3,431 offenders one year earlier.
The average daily count (ADC) of state inmates in state fiscal year 2010 was 3,450, an increase of 63 from the FY 2009 ADC of 3,387. From FY 2009 to FY 2010, the ADC for female inmates rose by 10, from 374 to 384 and the ADC for male inmates rose by 53 from 3,013 to 3,066. Overall, there was a 1.86% increase in ADC from FY 2009 to FY 2010.
”Our prison population is roughly the same as it was four years ago,” stated Corrections Secretary Tim Reisch. “We are very hopeful that our current emphasis on prisoner reentry will serve to reduce the prison population in the years to come.”
Since FY 2006, growth to the state’s prison population has been minimal with an increase of just 22 inmates from FY 06 to FY 10.
FY 06-07: 1.45% decline
FY 07-08: 1.01% decline
FY 08-09: 1.29% increase
FY 09-10: 1.86% increase
The increase in ADC from FY 2006 to FY 2010 is attributable to increases in the state’s female inmate population. The ADC for females rose by 26 from FY 2006 to FY 2010, while during the same period the ADC for males dropped by 4.
