Celebrate Children’s Book Week!
PIERRE - Families across the nation will celebrate their right to read during Children’s Book Week November 17-23. The theme this year is “Free To Read.”
Pam Kringel, South Dakota State Library’s children’s services coordinator, is encouraging families to spend time reading together during Children’s Book Week. Kringel says, “Reading is a right that families should exercise every day. Reading together creates warm family memories that last a lifetime.”
Some fun family reading activities:
- Begin a regular family storytime by sharing special books or stories and then talking about them afterwards. Remember that children are never too old or too young to be read to.
- Create a list of immediate and extended family members’ favorite children’s books. Then visit the local library and check one of them out to use during family storytime. Relatives who live far away can participate in the storytime by reading a favorite story over the phone.
- Do arts and crafts projects related to books and reading; for example, make and decorate bookmarks.
- Visit the local library as a family to participate in Children’s Book Week activities and to select and borrow quality children’s literature.
South Dakotans without local libraries may request books and other library services directly from the State Library by calling 1-800-423-6665 toll free, via the Internet at http://www.sdstatelibrary.com/, or through the mail by writing to the State Library, 800 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501.
The South Dakota State Library provides free library services to all South Dakotans, either through their local library or directly. Alternative formats (such as Braille and audio) are also available.
