PIERRE -- The state arts agency announced these grant awards to non-profit organizations, schools and individual artists, for arts projects during Fiscal Year 2002 (July 1, 2001 - June 30, 2002).

PROJECT GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 36 Project Grants, which provide matching funds to support community-based arts activities.

STATEWIDE SERVICES GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 2 Statewide Services Program Grants to support organizations whose statewide missions support and complement the goals and objectives of the South Dakota Arts Council's long-range plan.

ARTS CHALLENGE GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 25 Arts Challenge Grants to support the yearly activities of the state's major arts institutions and community arts organizations.

ARTIST GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 8 Artist Grants, which provide funds for individual artists to further their professional growth and development while contributing artistically to the artist's region or the state.

ARTIST COLLABORATION GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 2 Artist Collaboration Grants to support collaborative projects between South Dakota and out-of-state artists. These grants are designed to expand the horizon and artistic base of South Dakota artists and to provide artistically enriching experiences to the citizens of the state.

FOLK ARTS APPRENTICESHIP GRANTS - - - The Council awarded 3 Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grants, which provide funds to master artists to teach qualified apprentices, thereby insuring that the folk art form will be passed on to another generation.

ARTISTS-IN-SCHOOLS GRANTS (AIS) - - - The Council approved funding for approximately 200 weeks of Artists-In-Schools residencies conducted by professional artists at schools and other educational institutions throughout the state. Nearly 170 weeks have already been scheduled, with money in the budget available to schedule additional residencies.

TOURING ARTS GRANTS - - - The Council approved second-year funding for 37 performing and visual artists. Grants awarded to these artists are used to underwrite performances, readings and art exhibitions sponsored by nonprofit organizations throughout the state.

Aberdeen

  • Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center: $5,100. Project Grant supports Summer Youth Arts Outreach, Fine Arts for Special Populations, Fine Arts for Senior Citizens, and Storybook Land Theatre.
  • University-Civic Symphony: $1,700. Project Grant supports the importation of professional musicians for the 2001-02 Symphony season.
  • Dakota Prairie Museum: $500. Project Grant supports creation of a Native American exhibit at the museum and artist-in-residence activities during the construction period.
  • L. Frank Baum Oz Festival: $1,375. Project Grant supports the production and performance of an Oz play during the annual Oz Festival held in June 2002.
  • Aberdeen Area Arts Council: $5,537. Arts Challenge Grant supports yearly programming of the local arts council.
  • Aberdeen Community Theatre: $9,816. Arts Challenge Grant supports ACT's season of locally produced theatrical productions, classes, workshops, and professional touring productions and special events.
  • Diane Fields: $2,753. Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant supports the efforts of master folk artist Diane Fields to teach nalbinding (a traditional folk art) to an identified apprentice.
  • School for the Blind and Visually Impaired: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports two 1-week residencies at the school.
  • Kevin Locke: $5,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Mark Shekore: $1,500. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for art exhibitions sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Alexandria

  • Hanson School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week artist-in-residence at the school.

Allen

  • Dallas Chief Eagle: $7,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Arlington

  • Arlington Elementary School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week artist-in-residence at the school.

Armour

  • Armour Grade School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week artist-in-residence at the school.

Aurora

  • Jackie Rae Bird: $3,500. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Belle Fourche

  • Ariadne Albright: $3,000. Artist Grant supports the artist's plans for more effectively promoting and marketing her work.

Beresford

  • Aspire Alternative School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week visual arts residency at the school.

Box Elder

  • Douglas School District: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports two 1-week residencies at Vandenberg Elementary School.

Brandon

  • Brandon Elementary School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week artist-in-residence at the school.
  • Brandon Middle School: $1,600 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-month theatre residency at the school.

Brookings

  • Brookings Chamber Music Society: $1,200. Project Grant supports "Guest Artist Series," a program which presents a series of musical artists and ensembles to the Brookings community.
  • SDSU-Civic Symphony: $2,100. Project Grant supports the importation of supplementary musicians for performances with the Symphony.
  • South Dakota String Teachers Association: $500. Project Grant supports the J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra, a chamber orchestra composed of the top 22 string players in the South Dakota All-State Orchestra.
  • Brookings Arts Council: $2,920. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Council as it maintains a gallery and art center and provides a variety of arts experiences for the citizens of Brookings.
  • Prairie Repertory Theatre: $10,079. Arts Challenge Grant supports seasonal programming of the Theatre in both Brookings and Madison.
  • South Dakota Art Museum: $10,753. Arts Challenge Grant supports the collection, preservation and exhibition of visual art and other yearlong programming at the Museum.
  • David Allan Evans: $750. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Medary Elementary School: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 2-week theater residence at the school.
  • Mickelson Middle School: $1,600 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-month visual arts residency at the school.

Buffalo

  • Harding County Schools: $1,600 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-month visual arts residency in the county's various schools.

Burke

  • Burke School District: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week dance residency in the school district.

Canton

  • Canton Middle School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week literature residency at the school.

Castlewood

  • Castlewood Arts Council: $1,200 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports three 1-week residencies at various grade levels in the school district.

Cavour

  • Cavour Elementary School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week artist-in-residence at the school.

Centerville

  • Centerville Public Schools: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week folk arts residency at the elementary school.

Chamberlain

  • St. Joseph's Indian School: $2,400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports three 2-week residencies in folk arts, literature, and multi-disciplinary arts.

Custer

  • Black Hills Playhouse: $18,521. Arts Challenge Grant supports 5-show summer season at the Playhouse in Custer State Park and outreach to children and under-served communities in the state.

Deadwood

  • Adams Museum and House: $2,500. Project Grant supports "From Shakespeare to Big Band: History Brought to Life Through the Arts," the AM&H-sponsored 2001-02 concert and performance series.
  • Anna Martinez: $3,000. Artist Grant supports editing, publishing and promotion of a limited edition book of the writer's poetry.

DeSmet

  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant: $2,000. Project Grant supports the production of the second in a series of three new pageants based on the life and times of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
  • Prairie Lakes Arts Council: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports one-week theatre residency in the DeSmet schools.

Doland

  • Doland School District: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a one-week residency in the Doland schools.

Faulkton

  • Faulkton Arts Council: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week theatre residency at Faulkton High School.

Flandreau

  • The Goodeagles: $1,500. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Fort Pierre

  • City of Fort Pierre: $2,000. In commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this Project Grant supports the creation and performance of a comedic played based on the Corps of Discovery's experiences as they traveled through what is now Fort Pierre.

Freeman

  • Swiss Choral Society: $1,500. Project Grant supports the Society's annual fall production of major choral works. This year the concert will feature "Messiah" by G.F. Handel and "Gloria" by John Rutter.
  • LeRoy Graber: $1,415. Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant supports the efforts of master folk artist LeRoy Graber to pass on willow basketry (a traditional folk art) to an identified apprentice.

Fulton

  • Denkota Institute: $1,000. Project Grant supports the planning, coordination and implementation of educational programming and materials associated with Phase 3 of the Australian Aboriginal/Northern Plains Lakota Cultural Exchange.

Garretson

  • Garretson School District: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 2-week visual arts residency at the elementary school.

Gayville

  • Gayville-Volin School District: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 2-week visual arts residency in the school district.

Gettysburg

  • High Plains Arts Council: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week residency in the Gettysburg schools.
  • Gettysburg High School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week literature residency at the high school.

Groton

  • Granary Rural Cultural Center: $5,106. Arts Challenge Grant supports year-round visual arts programming at the Center.

Hayti

  • Hamlin Schools: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week visual arts residency at the school.

Hermosa

  • Grete Bodøgaard: $6,000. Artist Collaboration Grant supports an artistic collaboration between Bodøgaard and Seattle artist, Eva Isaksen. The culmination of the project will be an exhibition that tours the Seattle area and South Dakota. Exhibitions in Rapid City, Vermillion and Brookings have been secured.

Hot Springs

  • Hot Springs Area Chamber of Commerce: $1,200. Project Grant supports the "Badger Clark Hometown Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering."

Howard

  • Howard Schools: $400 + artists travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week visual arts residency in the school district.

Huron

  • Huron Symphony League: $1,000. Project Grant supports the importation of musicians for the Symphony League's 2001-02 season.
  • Our Home Alternative School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week multi-disciplinary residency at the school.
  • Buchanan School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week literature residency at the school.

Kyle

  • Little Wound Elementary School: $4,100 + artists' travel reimbursement. AIS Grants support a 4-week theatre residency and three 1-week visual arts residencies at the school.

Lead

  • Historic Homestake Opera House: $1,700. Project Grants supports the design and creation of textile art pieces for the videoconference and telecommunications center at the Opera House.

Lower Brule

  • Lower Brule Elementary School: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 2-week visual arts residency at the school.

Madison

  • Aim High Alternative School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grants supports a 1-week visual arts residency at the school
  • Madison Area Arts Council: $1,200 + artists' travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 3 weeks of visual arts residencies in the elementary schools.

Martin

  • Martin Grade School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week folk arts residency at the school.

Mission

  • Todd County Schools: $3,200 + artists' travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 8 weeks of dance, literature and visual arts residencies at North Elementary, Rosebud Elementary, Todd County Middle School, and Iglukinipi Intervention.

Mitchell

  • Dakota Chorale: $1,500. Project Grant supports the Chorale's two-concert 2001-02 season: "Music of the Middle Border" and "Messiah."
  • Mitchell Area Arts Council/Oscar Howe Art Center: $6,217. Arts Challenge Grant supports the management of the Oscar Howe Art Center as well as a variety of arts related events.

Murdo

  • Book & Thimble Club/Jones County Schools: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week visual arts residency at the high school.

New Underwood

  • Duane Reichert: $7,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances and residency activities sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Oldham

  • Prairie Lakes Arts Council: $1,500. Project Grant supports a variety of Arts Council sponsored activities in DeSmet, Arlington, Lake Preston and Oldham.

Onida

  • High Plains Arts Council: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 1-week folks arts residency in the Sully Buttes School District.

Philip

  • Rasma Lielmane: $1,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Piedmont

  • Stagebarn Elementary School: $800 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 2-week visual arts residency at the school.

Pierre

  • Capital City Children's Chorus: $2,000. Project Grant supports the commissioning of a musical work for the Children's Chorus in celebration of the anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, as well as additional operating expenses of the Chorus.
  • Capital University Center: $1,600. Project Grant supports the design and creation of a "termesphere" by South Dakota artist, Dick Termes, depicting the Corp of Discovery and its historical significance.
  • Short Grass Arts Council: $2,000. Project Grant supports the Council's season of programming, focused next year on arts activities titled "Experience the Arts . . . for Life!"
  • Pierre Players: $4,273. Arts Challenge Grant supports the year-round season of Pierre Players, one of the oldest, continuously operating community theaters in the state.
  • Pierre School District: $1,600 + artists' travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports 4 weeks of residencies at Jefferson, McKinley and Washington schools.

Pine Ridge

  • The Heritage Center: $10,229. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Heritage Center in its collection, preservation and exhibition of Native American art.
  • Arthur Amiotte Retrospective Exhibition: $4,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for exhibitions sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

Porcupine

  • Our Lady of Lourdes School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week theatre residency at the school.

Rapid City

  • Backroom Productions: $1,000. Project Grant supports the Black Hills Songwriters Summer 2002 Workshop, a five-day event for area songwriters.
  • Black Hills Chamber Music Society: $4,000. Project Grant supports a season of chamber music activities including concerts and special projects for youth and the elderly.
  • Dakota Choral Union: $2,000. Project Grant supports "Salute 2001: An American Patriotic Celebration," the season's kick-off concert designed to celebrate America's freedom.
  • Storybook Island Theatre: $2,500. Project Grant supports the production by Storybook Island Theatre Company of 4 original musical production, written, composed and directed by local theater artists and performed for over 30,000 visitors at the popular theme park.
  • Black Hills Community Theatre: $12,122. Arts Challenge Grant supports BHCT's season of theatrical productions and educational outreach activities.
  • Black Hills Symphony Orchestra: $6,904. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Symphony's concert season and educational outreach activities for youth of the Black Hills region.
  • Dakota Artists Guild: $5,377. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Guild's Dakota Arts Gallery in exhibiting and promoting artists in the region.
  • Rapid City Arts Council: $14,290. Arts Challenge Grant supports a variety of extensive visual and performing arts programming available to the people of Rapid City and the larger geographic area it serves.
  • Joyce James Jefferson: $3,000. Artist Grant supports the artist's collaboration with neighboring artists to revise, refine and rehearse new work; the artist's attendance at the Black Storytellers Alliance Conference; and the acquisition of a sound system and historical costumes.
  • Ken Steinken: $3,000. Artist Grant supports the author's development of a book-length work of creative nonfiction tentatively titled "At What Price? A close-up of the people, the land, and a railroad's quest for coal in the 21st Century."
  • Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota: $10,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances and residency activities sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • The Cowboys: $1,000. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Christopher Robin Johnson: $1,400. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Lloyd Kreitz: $2,400. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for exhibitions sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Periaktos Productions: $3,500. Touring Arts Grant to be used for underwriting fees for performances sponsored by South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
  • Rapid City School District: $3,200 + artists' travel reimbursement. AIS Grants support 8 weeks of artist residencies at various schools throughout the district.
  • Zion Lutheran School: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week visual arts residency at the school.

Redfield

  • Redfield Area Arts Council: $1,000. Project Grant supports the Council's Community Theatre in the presentation of its annual spring theatrical production.

Red Owl

  • Robert Dennis: $3,000. Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant supports the efforts of master folk artist Robert Dennis to teach saddle making (a traditional folk art) to an identified apprentice.

Salem

  • McCook Central Schools: $400 + artist's travel reimbursement. AIS Grant supports a 1-week literature residency in the elementary school.

Sioux Falls

  • Dance Network of South Dakota: $1,275. Project Grant supports activities held in conjunction with the annual Dance Network Conference, including performance and residency activities by the Paul Taylor Dance Company.
  • Sioux Empire Youth Symphonies: $4,000. Project Grant supports a series of 9 yearly concerts performed by Sioux Empire students comprising 4 different orchestras and musical training for young musicians in strings, winds, brass and percussion.
  • Siouxland Heritage Museum: $800. Project Grant supports "Folk Arts Day at the Old Courthouse Museum," a two-day residency and afternoon of demonstrations and exhibitions featuring Native American crafts, music and dancing.
  • South Dakota Friends of Traditional Music: $2,500. Project Grant supports the 2001 Summer Concert Series, held at Newton Hills State Park.
  • Children's Theatre of Sioux Falls: $2,900. Project Grant supports the inaugural season of the Children's Theatre of Sioux Falls, which will include two fully mounted theatrical productions, one in partnership with the Sioux Falls Park District, and the other in partnership with Augustana College's Departments of Theatre and Deaf Education.
  • YMCA Sioux Falls: $500. Project Grant supports a series of music and movement exercises that demonstrate the six pillars of character to 5 different groups of summer campers.
  • South Dakotans for the Arts: $35,000. Statewide Services Program Grant supports South Dakotans for the Arts in its mission of advancing the arts through service, education and advocacy. SoDA provides leadership in arts education and offers services to community arts councils and other arts organizations and partners with the South Dakota Arts Council on a variety of statewide projects.
  • Northern Plains Tribal Arts: $9,251. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show and Market and related activities designed to preserve and enhance the traditional and contemporary arts of the tribes of the Northern Plains.
  • Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society: $15,894. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Society's annual summer JazzFest and a jazz concert series throughout the year.
  • South Dakota Symphony Orchestra: $30,000. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Symphony's season of orchestral music, special concerts to serve those unable to attend the regular concert series, and education and touring programs such as the Dakota String Quartet and the Dakota Wind Quintet.
  • Sioux Falls Community Playhouse: $13,277. Arts Challenge Grant supports SFCP's season of theatrical performances, concerts, and special events as well as theatre classes, workshops and summer camps.
  • Washington Pavilion: $30,000. Arts Challenge Grant supports the visual and performing arts seasons at the Pavilion's Visual Arts Center and the Husby Performing Arts Center.
