SPRING TURKEY SEASON OPENS APRIL 14
PIERRE – Turkey hunters targeting South Dakota can take to the field Saturday, April 14 when the state’s 2001 spring turkey season officially begins.
Game Management Specialist Ron Fowler said spring turkey hunters can start their 2001 season one-half hour before sunrise and hunt till sunset. In addition to shotguns, rifles and handguns are legal in most areas.
"One important note," Fowler said, "is that the use of rifles and handguns will remain illegal in six areas, including: the counties of Davison, Hanson, Grant, Hutchinson, Marshall, Roberts, Sanborn and Stanley south of Oahe Dam, east of S.D. Highway 1806 and north of U.S. Highway 14, except as posted by the Corps of Engineers to prohibit firearms.
South Dakota’s spring turkey season will be open through May 20.
