HUNTING ATLAS AND HANDBOOK AVAILABLE
PIERRE – Hunters can get the 2001 South Dakota Hunting Handbook and 2001 South Dakota Hunting Atlas at state Game, Fish and Parks offices and most licensing agents throughout the state.
"Anyone hunting in South Dakota should get a copy of each of these publications," said Communications Manager Chuck Schlueter. "Each has information valuable to hunters pursuing South Dakota’s game."
The Hunting Handbook has the general laws and regulations hunters need to know. Additionally, it contains other information, like license requirements, season dates, shooting hours and more.
New for 2001 is the South Dakota Hunting Atlas. This book of county maps is a consolidated issue of the former Walk-In Areas Atlas, Sportsman’s Atlas and Public Hunting Areas brochure. Displayed in this booklet are private lands leased as public Walk-In Areas, the state’s Game Production Areas (GPAs), federal Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs), some School Lands and some lands under the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
"The new atlas is a higher-quality publication than before and is being offered for free," Schlueter noted. "However, we ask that individuals take only one copy each, as the intention is to keep it free for future editions. If printing numbers and costs get too high for the atlas, a charge may be required to offset printing costs, as was done with the former Sportsman’s Atlas."
The handbook and atlas are both available at Game, Fish and Parks offices, most license agents or by email request from the Game, Fish and Parks website at www.state.sd.us/gfp/DivisionWildlife/Requests.htm . They are also available as PDF files that can be printed from the website using Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Web users can find links on the department’s homepage at www.state.sd.us/gfp/.
