On-Line Renewal Available for South Dakota Vehicle Owners
(PIERRE, SD) – For South Dakota vehicle owners, renewing their vehicle registration just became as easy as logging on to their computer. The state Department of Revenue and Regulation, Division of Motor Vehicles, today released the on-line renewal system for public use.
The on-line renewal system can be accessed at www.SDcars.org and is available from 90 days up to 10 days prior to the vehicle’s registration expiration date; on-line renewals will not be accepted less than 10 days prior to the registration expiration date to allow time for processing. Under this schedule, vehicle owners with March renewals will have until March 21st to renew using the on-line process. Individuals wanting to renew on-line must enter an identification number along with their date of birth. In the case of a company, a sealed renewal form will be mailed to the company which will contain instructions and a password that must be used in the on-line renewal process. Division Director Deb Hillmer says ease of use and convenience for taxpayers were key concerns in designing the system.
“We recognize that people lead busy lives and it’s not always convenient to take the time to go to your county treasurer’s office to renew your vehicles. With on-line renewal, you can complete the transaction from your computer anywhere, at any time that is convenient for you,” Hillmer said. “Once you log in to the system, all you have to do is follow the instructions, pay the appropriate fees, and wait to receive your new registration.”
Because the transaction is completed electronically, Hillmer says a $1.00 convenience fee per vehicle will be assessed, in addition to the registration and mailing fees. Acceptable forms of payment include electronic check, credit cards (MasterCard or Discover only), or ATM/debit cards supported by Pulse, Star, and NYCE.
Only vehicles that are within the 90-day renewal period can be completed on-line; boat and certain snowmobile renewals are not available at this time but will be added in the future along with other enhancements. Address changes must also be made through your county treasurer’s office prior to on-line renewal.
