Sturgis Rally Vendor Tax Revenues Up, Down Depending on Location
 
 
(PIERRE, SD) – According to the latest figures available from the Department of Revenue and Regulation, sales and tourism tax revenues from temporary vendors for this year’s 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally were $853,445 in the Northern Hills (which includes Sturgis and all other communities within Meade and Lawrence Counties). The revenue is down $193,163 from last year’s Rally total of $1,046,608.
 
Tax revenues from the event will continue to be collected over the next few weeks, even though the last official day was August 12, 2007.
 
Of the $853,445 collected so far this year, $503,751 was state sales tax, $214,548 was municipal sales tax, $9,464 was municipal bed, board and booze tax, and $125,680 was state tourism tax revenue. Official reports show 1,327 vendors displayed and sold products at the 2007 Rally as compared to 1,371 in 2006 and 1,200 in 2005. Gross vendor sales in the Northern Hills area for the 2007 Rally totaled $12,591,397, down $2,930,898 from last year’s gross sales of $15,522,295.
 
The Southern Hills (including Rapid City, Custer, HillCity, Keystone and PenningtonCounty) posted vendor sales tax revenues totaling $170,609. Of that amount, $97,561 was state sales tax, $47,957 was municipal sales tax, $700 was municipal bed, board and booze tax, and $24,390 was state tourism tax. Gross vendor sales from the 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally totaled $2,439,032 in the Southern Hills, up $23,238 from 2006 gross sales of $2,415,794.
 
Tax rates for the Rally vary depending on the type of merchandise sold and the location of the concessions.
