Highway 44 to Close West of Platte-Winner Bridge

The South Dakota Department of Transportation will close SD Hwy 44, west of the Platte-Winner bridge, to traffic on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 due to a landslide causing an emergency safety concern.

Highway 44 will be closed from just west of the Platte-Winner bridge to Hwy 1806 South for a minimum of 10 days and possibly up to 40 days. The road repair work is needed due to heavy spring rains and runoff in the area causing the landslide to move at an accelerated rate. The road continues to slide and deteriorate creating a major safety concern.

Travelers should plan to use an alternate route to cross the Missouri River during the closure period. Alternate routes include I-90 at Chamberlain and US Hwy 18 at Pickstown.
