I-29/West 12th Street Construction to Begin Soon

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Crews working for the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will soon begin work on the I-29/West 12th Street reconstruction project in Sioux Falls. SDDOT commissioners will award the construction contract at the Transportation Commission meeting on Thursday, Feb. 23, with construction expected to begin in mid to late March.

SDDOT plans to rebuild 1.5 miles of I-29 to flow over West 12th Street. As part of the reconstruction, West 12th Street will be widened from Lyons Boulevard through Marion Road, adding additional through lanes and a left turn lane as well as center medians. Crews will also rebuild the West 12th Street/Marion Road intersection in addition to 1500 feet of Marion Road. SDDOT will maintain access to local businesses throughout the project.

During construction, the contractor will build a temporary two-lane bridge over I-29 for West 12th Street traffic. Both I-29 and West 12th Street will remain open for the majority of the project, however temporary closures are anticipated at various times.

Construction crews will close the northbound 12th Street onramp throughout construction. The northbound onramp will close approximately one month after construction begins. Traffic will be detoured to the 26th Street and Madison Street interchanges.

SDDOT plans to issue regular newsletters to give the latest information about the project and to let the public know about upcoming construction activity, traffic control measures and the project timeline. Anyone wishing to receive a newsletter should contact SDDOT’s Sioux Falls Area Engineer, Craig Smith at (605) 367-5680. Project information will also be available on the SDDOT website at SDDOT.com.
