SDDOT to Hold Meeting on Highway Renumbering

RAPID CITY -- The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will hold a public meeting Thursday, January 27, 2005 from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. to answer questions about renumbering of numerous sections of highways in and around Rapid City. In addition to SDDOT staff, representatives from the city and county will be in attendance. The meeting will be held at the SDDOT’s Rapid City Region Office, located at 2300 Eglin Street in Rapid City.

The building of the Southeast Connector in Rapid City is prompting changes that will officially take place by the fall of 2005. Once it is complete, the new Southeast Connector will link US 16, US16 Truck and SD79 to Interstate 90.  Upon completion, the Southeast Connector will be designated as US16 Truck and SD79 and will be maintained by the SDDOT. The city will take over jurisdiction and responsibilities of current segments of state highway including: US 16 Truck (the section located on Cambell Street and East North Street), SD 79 (the section located on Cambell), SD 230 (Eglin Street), SD 238 (St. Patrick Street from Cambell to SD44), SD 437 (Elk Vale Road from the structure over SD44 to Concourse Drive), and Beale and Offutt Streets which are both service roads along I-90.  With the exception of the Southeast Connector, all roads included in the jurisdictional exchange will become city streets. Their street names will remain the same, but the state highway designation will be removed.

The SDDOT is notifying the public in advance in order provide sufficient time to make any necessary changes to mailing addresses and/or to give business owners time to modify business brochures, pamphlets, signs and other promotional information.  The city or county will send written notices to any land or business owner if the renumbering will result in a mailing address change.
