SDDOT to Hold Open House on
Highway 42 Corridor Study
(Sioux Falls) The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will hold an open house on Tuesday, September 23 to get input about the Highway 42 corridor study. The open house will run from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Willow Run Golf Course Clubhouse in Sioux Falls.
Since July, SDDOT and local governments have been conducting a corridor preservation study for SD Highway 42, from the Willow Run Golf Course eastward to the Iowa border. The study, which is expected to be complete by December 2003, is a preservation plan that will describe opportunities and constraints, potential design concepts and right-of-way needs to accommodate forecasted traffic, access management strategies, and an implementation plan, including a corridor "footprint" to illustrate the future SD 42.
SDDOT has conducted research to identify ways that corridor preservation can be applied in South Dakota. This study is an implementation of that research. The objective of the study is to apply preservation techniques to the SD 42 transportation corridor.
Special concerns that have emerged with the study include:
- Need to consider the existing Rowena community;
- Need to consider the planned parks in the west portion of the corridor; and,
- Need to consider the planned aesthetics of the corridor, including a possible border entry feature.
The public is encouraged to participate in the process by attending the September 23 open house. A second open house will be held later this year.
