I-29 Project Wins Highway Construction Award
PIERRE, SD– The construction project on I-29 between Exits 150 and 164 recently received honors as the best concrete paving project in the state. South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Operations Director, Darin Bergquist announced the award winners Wednesday, January 4, at the SDDOT/AGC (Associated General Contractors) Partnership for Highway Quality banquet in Pierre.
The project involved laying concrete pavement over 13 miles of the northbound lane of I-29 from the Estelline/Toronto Exit to the Castlewood/Clear Lake Exit. It also included bridge deck overlays, bridge approach modifications, guardrail and culvert safety improvements. The pavement thickness was 10 inches for this project.
The contractor, Progressive Contractors, Inc. of St. Michael, MN, removed the existing concrete pavement, then crushed and recycled it for use as gravel cushion to provide a solid foundation for the new surfacing. During this, and all the construction operations, traffic was placed head-to-head on the southbound lanes of I-29 and maintained at the interchanges with temporary ramps.
Paving began on August 22 and was completed in 21 days. Progressive Contractors took particular care to ensure a smooth ride to the finished pavement.
Progressive Contractors, Inc. worked with SDDOT’s Watertown Area/Brookings Office in addition to 12 subcontractors: Bituminous Paving, Inc.; Buskerud Construction, Inc.; Central Dakota Consultants; David A. Swenson Construction; Guardrail Enterprises; Highway Improvements, Inc.; Highway Services, Inc.; Interstate Sealant & Concrete; Loiseau Construction, Inc.; Mulder & Sons, Inc. and Weatherton Contracting Co., Inc.
Each year the SDDOT and AGC award top construction projects around the state at the annual partnering meeting. A committee made up of members from both organizations and the Federal Highway Administration evaluate the nominations and select the top winners.
