Interstate Bridge Struck, Damaged
(Pierre) The I-90/US 83 bridge south of Ft. Pierre was hit Saturday evening causing damage to the structure. Region Engineer, Larry Engbrecht, says a construction company was transporting a backhoe on a trailer in the westbound lane of I-90. The backhoe was too tall to clear the bridge and hit the steel girders resulting in damage to two of the five girders. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The damaged segment of the bridge is closed while DOT crews investigate and evaluate possible fixes. Engbrecht says it is too early to say how long it will take to repair the bridge. Single lane traffic is allowed over the unaffected area, but travelers may experience short delays.
