Officials Searching for Vehicle that Hit Interstate Bridge Near Sioux Falls
(Sioux Falls) The South Dakota Highway Patrol is searching for a vehicle that hit an overhead bridge on Interstate 90 near Sioux Falls last week, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Officials say an eyewitness reported the accident around 3:00 PM Thursday, October 2. According to the eyewitness, a semi pulling a backhoe was traveling west on I-90. The backhoe apparently was too tall and struck the overhead bridge where Kiwanis Avenue crosses I-90. The Highway Patrol conducted an immediate search in the area for the vehicle and driver, but was unsuccessful. Captain Jeff Talbot says the Highway Patrol is hoping someone with information about the accident will come forward. They can contact the Highway Patrol’s Sioux Falls office at 605-367-5700.
Department of Transportation officials say the accident damaged the first and fourth girder of the bridge. DOT crews have restricted the bridge to one lane and are using stop signs to help direct traffic. The bridge should be completely repaired by next spring or early summer.
