Department of Transportation and Associated General Contractors Present Awards
PIERRE, SD - - The 8th annual South Dakota Quality Initiative program was held at the Ramkota Inn in Pierre on March 26th and 27th. During the awards banquet 11 awards were presented to Department of Transportation employees, in conjunction with the contractors involved, for excellence in either construction or design of highway projects.
The Department of Transportation and the Associated General Contractors of South Dakota sponsor the South Dakota Quality Initiative program.
The projects that received an award are distinguished as being of excellent construction and design. Criteria used in selecting the award-winning projects included difficulty of the project, unique obstacles that had to be overcome, outstanding teamwork between individuals involved in bringing the project to completion, and cost-saving efforts made without sacrificing quality.
Department of Transportation employees and prime contractors who received an award were:
- Watertown Area DOT Office and Graves Construction Company, Inc. for construction of six bridges on US 14 between Volga and Brookings;
- Aberdeen Area DOT Office and Border States Paving, Inc. for asphalt concrete construction on US 281 from SD 10 to the North Dakota border;
- Aberdeen and Watertown Area DOT Offices and Foothills Contracting, Inc. for grading on SD 10 by Lake City, SD;
- Mitchell Area DOT Office and Swingen Construction Company for an urban reconstruction project on SD 37 (Sanborn Boulevard Viaduct) in Mitchell;
- Belle Fourche Area DOT Office and Anderson Western, Inc. for asphalt concrete construction on US 85 south of the Butte/Harding County line;
- Rapid City Area DOT Office and Stanley J. Johnsen Concrete Contractor, Inc. for Portland cement concrete paving on I-90 in Lawrence County;
- Rapid City Area DOT Office and Heavy Constructors, Inc. for an urban reconstruction project on the Exit 58 (Haines Avenue) and Exit 57 interchanges on I-90 in Rapid City;
- Rapid City DOT Road Design Office for design of the paving and rehabilitation project on US 212 from Newell to Mud Butte;
- Pierre DOT Road Design Office for design of a grading project on SD 53 through White River;
- Pierre DOT Bridge Design Office for the bridge designs on SD 53 over the White River and Williams Creek; and
- NJS Engineering for the urban reconstruction design of US 85 between the Homestake Mine and US 385 in Lead.
