McCook County: Small Town Hospitality
PIERRE, S.D. – Conveniently located along Interstate 90 and in close proximity to Sioux Falls, McCook County is a great destination. Experience small town hospitality in the communities of Salem, Canistota, Bridgewater, Montrose and Spencer.
McCook County was named for former Dakota Territory Governor and Civil War General Edwin Stanton McCook, who served the state for two years before his assassination in 1873.
This area is a popular destination for fishermen, boaters and swimmers. The Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is known for its clear waters and abundant fish. Strong populations of walleye and northern pike keep fisherman coming back. During the fall, sportsmen will find healthy populations of waterfowl and upland game in the surrounding countryside, making the county an ideal hunting destination as well.
Venture to Canistota and experience the annual Sports Days, a three-day festival that includes a golf tournament, softball games, a dance, fireworks, pancake feed and more. Also, try your luck in the City of Canistota 125th anniversary raffle as the city gears up for the 2009 quasquicentennial, and try to win one of the rifles or scope kits up for grabs. This summer’s Sports Days will be held July 13-15, 2007.
