South Dakota Film Office gains full AFCI Membership
PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Film Office, a component of the Department of Tourism and State Development, has gained full membership status with the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). The status was made official after completion of core requirements were met in December 2007.
“The AFCI is a valuable resource for our office,” said Secretary Richard Benda of the Department of Tourism and State Development. “Being a part of an international organization helps the film office understand and meet the needs of those looking at South Dakota as their next filming location.”
The AFCI is the official professional organization for film commissioners, both domestic and international, who assist film, television and video production across the world. The AFCI is a non-profit educational association whose members serve as film commissioners for their respective governmental jurisdictions.
“The educational opportunities available through the AFCI are incredible,” said Lesa Jarding, of the Film Office. “Gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the needs of film professionals while networking with colleagues is an invaluable tool.”
The AFCI has created a three-tiered education program that provides valuable information and training opportunities for every film commissioner. So far, Jarding has completed Film Commission Fundamentals and Film Commission Professional. Additional classes are available throughout the year at various AFCI sanctioned events.
The Film Office works to market South Dakota as a filming location destination. That is achieved by advertising in trade publications, attending film festivals and trade shows and acting as a liaison for production companies looking at South Dakota as a filming location.
The South Dakota Film Office is part of Film the West, a consortium of the film offices in South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. The four offices work collaboratively to attend trade shows and host receptions throughout the year, and share booth space at the AFCI Locations Trade Show.
The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota.
