PIERRE, S.D. – Roberts County, situated in the northeast corner of South Dakota, is home to a handful of small communities, including New Effington, Rosholt, Sisseton and Wilmot, as well as the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. The county was named for S.G. Roberts of Fargo, North Dakota.

 

In Sisseton, located on the Sisseton Wahpeton Indian Reservation, discover attractions like Nicollett Tower and the Song to the Great Spirit Building on the campus of Sisseton Wahpeton College. This city, named for the Sisseton division of the Dakota Sioux, is located north of the tribal seat of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe at Old Agency, South Dakota.

 

Sisseton is also home to notable Native Americans like Gabriel Renville, the last chief of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. Joe Robbie, original owner of the Miami Dolphins, also originally hailed from Sisseton.

 

One of the area’s annual events is held each year in Sisseton. In July, the community celebrated its 15th annual Horse and Buggy Days. The event, held at Anderson Park, featured live entertainment, booths, crafts and food vendors.

 

Roberts County also boasts great walleye and perch fishing in Cottonwood and Whitestone lakes. In addition, Roberts County is located in the state’s prime pheasant-hunting range. Hunters here also will find whitetail deer attracted to crops like corn, oats, wheat and soybeans.
