Explore South Dakota’s largest collection of natural and cultural history at the W.H. Over Museum in Vermillion. Tour the museum’s collection of Sioux artifacts, view historic photographs of the South Dakota prairie and discover the rich early heritage of Clay County.

 

Admire the 1883 Italian villa architecture of the Austin-Whittemore House Museum in Vermillion. The home was built atop a river bluff after a disastrous flood destroyed the majority of Vermillion. The museum is filled with Victorian furnishings and items of local historical interest. The museum is also home to the Clay County Historical Society.

 

Old Main, the flagship building of the University of South Dakota is home to the largest collection of work by celebrated Native American artist Oscar Howe. Restored in 1862, Old Main is rich in history and is a symbol of excellence at the university.

 

Take a shopping excursion in historic downtown Vermillion. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the downtown district is home to more than 25 retail and specialty stores, eateries, pubs and numerous other friendly businesses and services. Enjoy the unique architecture and friendly atmosphere on a stroll down Main Street.
