PIERRE, S.D. – A film crew recently wrapped up filming in South Dakota for an upcoming episode of "Discovering America," which airs on The Outdoor Channel. “Discovering America” is a high definition travel show that features different U.S. locations with an emphasis on outdoor recreational opportunities available in that particular area.

“Earned media exposure like this will help drive consumer travel choices to South Dakota,” said Billie Jo Waara, director of the South Dakota Office of Tourism. “One 30-second advertisement during a show like this averages $4,000. An entire half-hour show devoted to South Dakota can be worth more than $150,000 in publicity.”

The crew filmed at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, the National Minuteman Missile Historic Site near Phillip, Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary and The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs.

The Office of Tourism has worked with the show’s production company since January after learning the company was seeking new locations to film “Discovering America.” Tourism officials assisted in identifying filming locations and acted as a liaison with those locations.
