State Historical Society announces History Teacher Award

PIERRE, SD – The South Dakota State Historical Society, in conjunction with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York, announces the third annual South Dakota Preserve America History Teacher of the Year Award.

The state winner receives $1,000 and a core archive of American history books and materials donated to their school library in their honor by Gilder Lehrman. They will then become eligible for the national competition, where the winner receives another $1,000 and an expense-paid trip to receive their award next fall in either New York or Washington, D.C. Previous South Dakota state winners are Vikki Hasche of Arlington and Darlene Kaye Telkamp of Spearfish.

Nominations for the state competition must be made by a school administrator and received by the State Historical Society by March 20. School principals across the state received informational letters about the award in February.

“This is an excellent opportunity for history teachers to receive statewide recognition,” said Jeff Mammenga of the State Historical Society, state Preserve America History Teacher of the Year coordinator. “We encourage people who have a favorite history teacher to contact a school administrator and get them nominated.”
