PRESS RELEASE 605/773-3131
On November 21, 2003, the South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) met in Pierre to select artists for participation in the SDAC’s Touring Arts and Artists-in-Schools & Communities programs.
Grants totaling $154,000 for FY05 were awarded to 46 professional artists and groups as part of the Council’s Touring Arts Program. This program makes the arts available in all regions of the state by providing funds to nonprofit sponsor organizations, including schools, to present touring performing arts programs and visual arts exhibitions.
The Council also endorsed 29 Artists-in-Schools & Communities (AISC) artists to conduct school and community-wide residencies for the next three year period. Through AISC, professional artists are placed in South Dakota communities to supplement existing school arts programs and life-long learning.
“Each year, more than 60,000 young people in over 150 schools participate in creative residencies with professional artists,” said Governor Mike Rounds. “In addition to the enrichment that children receive from artist residencies, approximately 200,000 audience members benefit from the quality performances and exhibitions through the State’s Touring Arts program. Artists bring creativity to our communities and enhance quality of life throughout the state."
The South Dakota Arts Council is a state agency within the Department of Tourism and State Development. The Arts Council's mission is to provide grants and services to artists and arts organizations throughout the state, with major funding from the State of South Dakota and the National Endowment for the Arts.
